Finding and Expressing Your Voice

Definition: Identifying and communicating your independent opinions clearly and appropriately (neither timid nor aggressive).

Balanced contributions may be welcomed. But without a clear position, influence remains limited. You may present multiple sides of an issue but avoid committing to one.

Finding your voice is not about speaking more. It is about speaking with conviction grounded in judgment. It requires tolerating the discomfort of disagreement and visibility.

When this challenge is overcome, others begin to rely on your perspective — not just your participation.

“But saying ‘yes’ no longer protects me — from disappointment or from invisibility. On my best days, I prioritize my workflow and protect my bandwidth. Most days, I accept lots of requests to help, taking on extra work.”

“My enthusiasm has quietly lengthened my workdays beyond my colleagues’. Effort has not resulted in proportional recognition. I go above and beyond, I find and pick up the slack around me, I feel the need to prove my worth by being the dependable one.”

I might be stuck.
